Counseling and Insomnia

Many cases of insomnia require the assistance of counseling, since many of the sources of insomnia are linked to various mental disorders. When a person is suffering insomnia over a length of time the common problem is not insomnia, rather a medical or mental ailment is enforcing the sleepless nights. When the mind is filled with chaos and unresolved questions then the mind will often rebel and the person will have difficulty falling into a REM sleep.

Bipolar patients often have difficulty falling asleep during night hours until medication is if puts the chemicals in the brain back on track. Bipolar patients often have a chemical imbalance that affects the central nervous system and targets the area of the brain were relaxation should exist. When the mind is filled with ongoing thoughts during waking and sleeping hours the mind will continue on a journey until exhaustion sets in and then the person becomes anxious, panicky, nervous, angry, and so forth. The person will often find it hard to cope during waking hours and when the person is in the present of others may find it difficult to put a lid on it when anger boils.

Other mental ailments, imbalances or disorders cause insomnia. As a rule, there is no such thing as a mental ailment or disorder without insomnia. Sleeping disorders differ slightly from mental disorders, in that sleeping disorders are easier to treat with florescent lights, medications and therapeutic steps. Mental disorders such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder are often difficult to relieve the mind, since treatment for this disorder is ongoing. Posttraumatic Stress Disorders are caused from trauma and many of the patients that suffer the disorder often have experienced ongoing trauma. There are lighter versions of the diagnose that is easier to treat, however a severe case of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-PTSD will require years of treatment and medications.

Schizophrenia, Psychosis, Schizoids, and other major mental ailments, disorders and damage of the brain will also take years to treat for the problems, including insomnia. insomnia for these patients are tricky, since some times the patient is able to sleep without problem, while other times lasting insomnia attacks takes control of the persons life. The problem is, we have three different diagnoses that when the mind is not relating to reality can lead to danger, thus sleep is essential for these patients to avoid harm to self and/or others. Psychiatrist and psychologist alike often treat such patients with medications and the patients are often required to attend therapy throughout his or her lifetime. In other words, some cases of insomnia linked to mental is ongoing for life, still help is available.

Medical problems such as chronic pain may cause insomnia to last throughout the person's life if little help is available for the pain. For example, if a person broke the spinal area by a fall, thus, surgeries may help, but the pain will exist throughout the person's life in many cases. When a person is suffering pain they often find it difficult to sleep at night, thus insomnia is mastered only when the pain is subdued.

Unfortunately, few people suffering insomnia seek help through alcohol and/or drugs. The alcohol and/or drugs will increase stress thus enforcing insomnia throughout the person's life until help is available. During night hours when sleep is ready, the last thing anyone should do is smoke, drink, exercise, or takes any substance or chemical that sparks the mind. Exercise is a great stress reliever and can help a person sleep over time, but exercise should not be carried out at least 'three' hours before bedtime. The best time to exercise is during the day hours.
